<br />The proposed designation 01 the Piedra River as a
<br />Wild and ScenIC River will be discussed at a public
<br />W(lrkshop January 11 at 7:30 p.m.
<br />
<br />This is a meeting 01 great imporlance to the entire
<br />county and IMt pari 01 Hinsdale county on this side
<br />01 the Continental DIvide. Tne mailer has been
<br />studied '01" some fime, the Forest ~viee has
<br />prepared V3nous alternatives, and some 01 the
<br />conclusions could be very harmlullO the area.
<br />
<br />Citizens will have an oppol1unity 10 hear the
<br />results 01 the study 10 dale, some of the conclusions
<br />reached, and lheallernatives suggested althe public
<br />meeting. They will also l1aye an opportunity to make
<br />comments, to offer further suggestions and alterna-
<br />tives, and 10 identity the issues.

<br />tributaries has been a maller 01 great conlroversey.

<br />citlzenry can cause lhe matter 10 be treated in a way

<br />It is evident Ihal e_tremisls and the so-called
<br />environmentalists have made the Piedra River area
<br />one oi ttleir prime largets lor a lock-up status
<br />designation. These groups are well fmanced, they
<br />have representalives who are much in evidence. and
<br />who are concerned not With the general public. or too
<br />much wilh the environment. Their maIO concern
<br />seems 10 be in haVing large areas 01 land lOCked as
<br />their playgrounds.

<br />Certainly no one In his right mind wanls to see Ihe
<br />Piedra area. or any other area, ruined. or Subjected
<br />to practices thaI WIll ruin ils beauty and appeal. On
<br />the other hand most senSible people will want to see
<br />the land managed in a way that preserves the
<br />beauty, yet allows lor reasonable use by Ihe general
<br />public.
<br />Such use would permil loggIng where it does not
<br />endanger ttle beauty or fulure 01 the land. Such use
<br />woutd oot condemn water rights that have boon 1M
<br />existence lor years and upon which the economy 01 a
<br />large part of the area IS based. SenSIble people do
<br />not want 10 see the entire area made inlo a place
<br />accessible only to those wtth much money and those
<br />who want such places made into what amounts to
<br />semi-private preserves.
