At this point this community is
trying to disprove that saying and not doing too badly
at the job.
The issue, of course, is the ridiculous boundaries
. drawn for the Piedra Wild and Scenic River Study
Area. A large area that in no possible way could be
considered wild and scenic river now, or 100 years
ago, has been proposed for study for inclusion into a
wild and scenic river designation.
Not only does this area, as proposed lor study, in
no way Qualify under the provisions of the law, it also
would wreck the economy of this community. It
- would indirectly affect those who are in the higher
Income brackets. but it would seriously affect the
ordinary man who works hard for his living.
A concerted effort on the part of this community,
involving many people and most local organizations,
has brought about support from some organizations
and people on higher levels. Thanks to Congressman
Frank Evans a legislative bill has been introduced
into Congress to reduce the boundaries to a more
reasonable status.
Prestigous Club 20 has added its weight to the
fight against the efforts to hamstring the economy of
this community so that a very few may enjoy
something that is rightfully for all to enjoy. The
County Commissioners, Town Board, and other
groups have joined the battle.
Now it will eventually be determined whether or
not local residents do have a say, if in fact the publiC
be damned people are going to overrule common
sense, and if a realistic approach will be laken so the
complex problem facing this area can be solved in a
sensible manner.
This is because there are :;ome undaunted
residents of the community that just don't know that
you can't successfully fight the Sierra Club, the
Colorado Open Space Council, and similar
organizations. They just may be right, too. and if
. determination and grit can bring about fair play and
justice they will have proved a point.
