People arc nOI waken_
ing up to the fact that what is now
'happening al the Piedra River
could very easily be next in line
for the San Juan River. the Blanco
River. and the Navajo River.
Everyone cries about unequaliza_
tion oftues and loosing more and
more of OUf freedom ever:"day,
but how many of us bother to try
to do anything about it? The lime

to get involved in public affairs is
rfght DOW. Those citizens who
wish 10 preserve their way of life
and their livelihood should
ccnainly a!tend these meetings.--
Those who own a business in the
area, and those who own llind
anywhere should attend all these
meetings. Do you want to keep
your land? Does all tbe bard work
and lifetime earnings that you
have pUt into it make it
worthwhile protecting? If so. you
should not lea\'e it up to someone
else to represent you. Anyone
concerned abo"'l keeping some
econom)' in this area should
certainly attend those meetings to
see Ihat their views are repre.
sented. The sUpport of long lime
residents is needed badly. Your \
ellperiences a.re of great value to
the communitv.

Planned for Our nellt meeting
date is the election of a
representative to meet with 'the
Secretary of Agriculture and with
the Colorado Department of
Natural Resources. This meetins
....ill be to review ttoe study when it
is submitted to Washington D.C,
Many of )'ou should have an
interest in this, if not, the wronS
~non may be choosen! _ One
who may not honestly represent
the best interest of the entire
community, The Citizens Com.
mittee SUpports the National
Wilderness Presc:rvation Act. and
also the National Wild and Scenic
River Act. It is becau!>e we do not
appreciate being misled that we
are Opposing this study. We feel
it unfair for 220.000 acres and 764
tributaries to have been induded
in this study. The question that
most of us seem to have is: How
. much wilderness is enough? I
have prepared the following
information for you.

?/~ J"'~
2 ~u Py

.
10:"./7~

~

I
,
i

In the United States national
forest there are already fourteen
million two hundred and fifty
thousand acre!> of wildernesses
and prim:uive areas. (14,250.000
acres) There are no roads. no
mau recreation' developments,
OlDd no timber cuning in these
areas. For the SUte of Coloudo
the picture is this way:
HEADQUARTERS TOTAL ACREAGE
G!.nWOOd Spnngs. Roadl~ss
areas are pUI in a shelf to be
studied, and these could vel)'
possibly later be induded in
wilderness. Taking thaI into
consideration the lotal wilderness
plus roadless areas in the Pagosa
Springs area equal 241,780 acres.
That equals 25.42~o of Colorado's
total.
I can't help but wonder, how
mucf1 i$ enou~?
