<br />Dolores <br /> <br />U.S. Department <br />01 the Interior <br />Water and Power <br />Resources Service <br /> <br />A Cultural <br />Resources <br />Mitigation <br />Program <br /> <br /> <br />As early as 1916, local leaders and the <br />UnIted Stales Government recognized <br />the need for waler conservation In the <br />southwestern portIon 01 the State of <br />Colorado. and at that time a dam and <br />reservolt project was proposed for <br />the Dolores River. In 1956. Congress <br />passed the ColoradO River Storage <br />PrOject Act, authoriZing funds for <br />study of reservoir storage along the <br />Dolores River. As a result, the first <br />definite plans for the McPhee Dam and <br />ReservOir were made. <br /> <br />Authorized in 1968, detailed investi- <br />gations 0' the Dolores Project were <br />appropriated in 1970. and construction <br />began in 1977. Construction 01 McPhee <br />Dam, largest feature 01 the prOject <br />began in 1980. <br /> <br />surrounding area are estimated. and <br />size and location 01 the necessary <br />dams and reservoirs are delermined_ <br />Even then, the resources of Ihe area <br />must be surveyed and evalualed to <br />avoid needless destruction. <br /> <br />MuCh unseen and unheralded work <br />goes on behind the scenes in an oper. <br />alion like the Dolores Project.
