Meetings were held with the <br />various Federal and State agencies and with community leaders <br />within the area so that their ideas and desires could be given con- <br />sideration in formulating the plan. <br /> <br />II. Environment in the Pro~ect Area. <br />A. Location <br />The project area is located in Taos County in northern New Mexico <br />near the town of Taos. It is located in one of New Mexico's most <br />scenic areas, lying on the west slope of the Sangre de Cristo <br />Mountains and extending to the benchland above the Rio Grande. <br />Indian Camp Reservoir, the principal project feature, is located <br />l;J.rgely on Carson National Forest lands; but a part of the site is <br />on pri vate land~. <br /> <br />B. Climate <br /> <br /> <br />The climate of thts area is temperate. While the winters are cold, <br /> <br /> <br />they are seldom severe, and the summers are cool. The mean annual <br /> <br /> <br />temperature is 47.10 F.; precipitation amounts to about 12.0 ~nches <br /> <br /> <br />annually. The average frost~free period is from May 26 through <br /> <br /> <br />September 30, averaging 128 days. <br /> <br />C. Topography <br />The project area lies primarily on gently sloped alluvial terrace <br />lands bordered on the east and southeast by the foothills of the <br />2 <br />
