<br />To protect the flood plain area of the Colorado River in the <br />vicinity of Yuma from potential backing-up effects of Morelos Dam in <br />Lower California, the Bureau is finishing the strengthening and raising <br />of levees in the Yuma Project. <br /> <br />In anticipation of shortly begiIlJ;ling clxedging the Colorado River <br />channel upstream from Needles a temporary! work bridge has been thrown <br />, <br />across the river near Needles. Maintenance clxedging of the recently <br />completed Needles-Topock channel has been; carried on. <br /> <br />On the Wellton-Mohawk Division, Gila Project, the three pumping <br />plants are in operation at partial capacii;y. Through temporary distribution <br />means devised by the water users for come:-and-get-it service, the Wellton- <br />Mohawk Division supplied Colorado River ~ter to nearly 10,000 acres of <br />cropped land this year. Units 1 and 2 of: the Mohawk Distribution system <br />are under construction and bids on Unit 3: will be opened this week. Con- <br />struction of the final section of the Wel1ton Canal and Unit 1 of the <br />Wellton-Mohawk distribution system. is under way. <br /> <br />In the next few years 120 farm tihits will be made available for <br />settlement in the Wellton-Mohawk Division. On the Yuma Mesa Division, 27 <br />units were aWarded to veterans in recent ,months. <br /> <br />A six-million dollar rehabilita~ion program on the Salt River <br />Project is about ~alf accomplished, incl~ding lining canals and laterals <br />and grouting the abutment and joints of Stewart Mountain Dam. <br /> <br />Three more generating units were placed in operation in the Hoover <br />Powerplant: the 50,000-kw Unit A-9 for Nevada, and the 82,500~kw Units A-3 <br />and A-4 for Ariz.ona. With the assistance of Governors and other state <br />officials, and leaders in reclamation, the Interior Department will dedicate <br />Davis Dam next Wednesday. <br /> <br />Region 3 is completing a report! on the Fort Mohave Project, in <br />the southerrunost tip of Nevada. Drafts of reports on the Dix:te Project in <br />southwestern utah and on the Moapa Valley Project on the MUddy River, 50 <br />miles north of Las Vegas, are being revised. <br /> <br />Two Colorado River pro~ects in~egion 3 are considered certain to <br />be built: (1) Bridge Canyon Demand Pow~rplant at the head of Lake Mead with <br />its auxiliary, Coconino Dam for sed:lJnen-tj detention on Little ColOrado River; <br />and (2) Marble Canyon Dam and Powerp1an~,39 miles below Lees Ferry. As <br />funds and personnel permit, coordinatedioperation and network analyzer studies <br />are being m,e.de in connection with both projects, fOr use in planning integrated <br />power system operations of ColOradO Riv~r plants. The field crew at Marble <br />Canyon has completed the current program fOr foundation exploration, is <br />making acces'8 road surveys, and will work next on detailed surveys for <br />Coconino Reservoir. We desire to be ready to go ahead rapidly with Marble, <br />Bridge, and Coconino after authorizatio~. <br /> <br />Several years ago the upper Co~orado River Compact Commission made <br />a comprehensive study of the water supp~ of the Upper Basin. .
