<br />"Solution of problems in water management (irrigation and <br />drainage practices), including conveyance, application, and <br />removal of excess water, and th~ adoption of field practices <br />based on these solutions, are e~sential to continued production <br />of the lands being currently irriigated and to new lands that <br />will be irrigated in projects now being constructed or con- <br />templated. <br /> <br />"It is a part of the basic and continuing responsibility of <br />of the Department of Agriculture to do the research and <br />provide the technical aid neede~ on these agricultural <br />problems in order to protect the large investments of the <br />Federal Government and the land~wners and operators on <br />irrigated lands." <br /> <br />The research work of the Soil Conservation Service - - carried on in <br />cooperation with the Bureau of Plant Industry, Soils, and Agricultural Engin- <br />eering, the Bureau of Agricultural Economics, and the State Experiment <br />Stations - - is related primarily to engineering aspects of water management <br />(irrigation and drainage), including irrigation water supplies and their <br />physical control, irrigation water requirements, methods of water application, <br />conveyance and prevention or removal and ~isposal of excess water (drainage). <br /> <br />* * * * * * * '* * * * <br /> <br />RECENT AND CONTEMPLATED ACTIVITIES OF THE <br />BUREAU OF RECLAMATION IN THE COLORADO RIVER BASIN <br /> <br />Wade H. Taylor, Assistant:Director, Region 3 <br /> <br />A year ago the Bureau had cOll\Pl~ted nine irrigation and multiple- <br />purpose projects in the Upper Colorado River Basin. These are operated <br />by the water users. All are current' in :tjleeting obligations to the <br />Government for return of projectco~ts. <br />l <br /> <br />On December 10, 1951, the 6-mil~ Duschesne Tunnel, to carry water <br />from. the south slope of the Uinta Mountalns into the headwaters of the Provo <br />River, utah, was holed through; by Novem~er 6, 1952 it had been concrete <br />lined. It will divert an average of 34,~0 acre-feet a year from. the <br />Colorado River Basin to the Provo River Project in the BonneVille Basin. <br /> <br />On the Paonia Proj.ect on the North Fork of the Gunni.son River <br />east of Delta, Colorado, work was continued on distribution facilities. <br />Contract was let for the 1.8 mile Fire Mountain Canal Extension. <br /> <br />On the Eden Project, 40 miles ~orth of Rock Springs, Wyoming, the <br />$1,030,000 Big Sandy Dam and Dike has b~en com;pleted and the $500,000 Eden <br />Canal is under construction. ' <br /> <br />I <br />On July 3, 1952, Congress authorized the Collbran Project which <br />would supplement the water supply for 20,000 acres in Plateau Valley east <br />of Grand Junction, Colorado, chiefly through construction of the 30,500 <br />acre-foot Vega Reservoir on plateau Crelfk.
