southeast a distance of about 27 miles. In addition to surplus water from the Tomillo Canal,
HCCRD obtains water from the Hudspeth Feeder Canal No.1, the Tomillo Drain, and the Rio
Grande through the Alamo heading and Alamo Canal. At least 7 laterals are supplied by the
Hudspeth Main Canal. Three reservoirs have been constructed in the HCCRD service area to
provide storage and regulation for the water obtained from EPCWID. According to J. Cline,
these reservoirs have a combined capacity of about 4,500 acre-feet in 1996.

Rio Grande Outflow

The outflow in the Rio Grande from this portion of the basin is shown by the records for
the stream gaging station at Fort Quitman. Table 2-8 summarizes these records and shows that
the outflow averaged 271,870 acre-feet during 1889-1995 and ranged from only 1,663 acre-feet
in 1965 to 1,550,230 acre-feet in 1905. Figure 2-7 is a bar chart showing the annual flows at
Fort Quitman during 1889-1995 and the ten-year summary average of annual flows. These
flows were small during the 1950's, 1960's, and 1970's, but have increased significantly during
the late 1980's and 1990's.

r. ,; ,., . 1
'J... j ~..: J..

2 -20
