It is based on a co-operative study <br />by the Colorado Water Conservation Board and the U. S. Department of <br />Agriculture. <br /> <br />. . <br /> <br />.' <br /> <br />Department of Agriculture participation was authorized under provlslons of <br />Section 6, P. L. 566, 83rd Congress, as amended, which authorizes the <br />Department to co-operate with other Federal, State and local agencies in <br />making investigations and surveys of the watersheds of rivers as a basis <br />for the development of co-ordinated programs. <br /> <br />Survey work of the U. S. Department of Agriculture was carried out by the <br />Soil Conservation Service, Forest Service and Economic Research Service <br />and was co-ordinated by a USDA Field Advisory Committee, Gunnison River <br />Basin, composed of representatives of these services. <br /> <br />PURPOSE AND SCOPE <br /> <br />The purpose of this report is to present information on water and related <br />land resource use and management which will provide a basis for an effective <br />means of co-ordinating USDA programs for watershed protection, flood preven- <br />tion, agricultural water management and national forest administration, <br />with related activities of local, State and other Federal agencies. It <br />also presents information which will provide a basis for the development <br />of projects under the Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act, P. L. <br />566, as amended. <br /> <br />The study was reconnaissance in nature and applicable data from previous <br />investigations were utilized wherever possible. The report is developed <br />from the results of field surveys and the analysis of material collected <br />from several sources. It is presented in the form of an inventory or <br />information document rather than an action or authorizing report. <br /> <br />Several State and Federal agencies, in addition to the U. S. Department of <br />Agriculture and the Colorado Water Conservation Board, have provided data <br />and much helpful assistance for this report. Chief contributors are the <br />Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Land Management, Colorado State Soil Con- <br />servation Board, Colorado Natural Resources Division, Colorado River Water <br />Conservation District, Upper Colorado River Commission, U. S. Bureau of <br />Census, U. S. Statistical Reporting Service, U. S. Geological Survey, U. S. <br />Weather Bureau, U. S.
