Future wark will entail varying strength of salutian, expasing bacteria which
cause biafauling ta chemicals far extended periads, and experimenting with the sequence
that chemical combinations are injected inta a well. A well redevelapment surging taol was
used at twa well sites in canjunctian with chemicals and may be used again alang with
ather surging and jetting equipment. In additian ta the search far mare effective bi.ofauling
cantral techniques, Reclamatian is researching the full nature .of the well pr.oductian in
.order ta develap a mare camprehensive plan in 1998 far lang term salutians.

A number .of cansultants and persannel fram the Reclamatian Technical Service Center
in Denver are warking with Clased Basin Divisian emplayees ta salve prablems regarding
the grass carp, algae, and biafauling.

Aquatic weeds, sand and debris have been remaved fram the channel in frant .of the
farebay trash rack .of the San Luis Lake Pumping Plant. This material was remaved with
a clam shell bucket and crane. Riprap and pitrun aggregate material was placed alang the
west edge .of this channel ta help preventfuture erasian .of sand inta the farebay area.
Rem.oval .of the traveling screen unit far replacement .of th~. e carrasian pr.otectian caating
and .overhaul .of all mechanical campanents is scheduled .or Fiscal Year (FY) 1999.

Water Quality \

Water quality manit.oring .of praject wells, the Ria Grande, Parshall Flume, Feeder Canal,
Head Lake, and San Luis Lake continued during 1997. Water quality was manitared at
Big Spring Creek Flume fram February ta Octaberand in the spring at San Luis Lake
Flume when water was flawing at this lacatian. In December manitaring .of the canal was
changed from the Parshall Flume ta the .outlet structure at the canfluence .of the canal and
the Ria Grande.

In July analysis .of samples far mast trace metals was changed fram unfiltered ta filtered
samples. This gives values far dissalved metals and agrees with the current stream
standards set by the Calarada Water Quality Cantral Cammissian which specify dissalved
metal values except far arsenic, iran, and mercury. These three metals are determined
as "tatal recoverable" using the pracedure. specified by the Enviranmental Pratectian
Agency (EPA).

), -
, .

The Water Quality Labaratary participated in the USGS Evaluatian Pragram far Standard
Reference Water Samples. Twa sets .of samples were distributed, .one in April. and .one
in Octaber. Results are rated an a scale .of 0 t.o 4. The .overall rating was 3.5 far the April
samples; results far the Octaber samples have nat been received.

t~

4
