To date
1,020 (86 percent) of the 1,181 planned floodwater retarding structure~
have been constructed. At the present time, 8 structures are under
construction, and 153 of the total planned remain to be constructed. There
are 2 planned watersheds on which construction has not yet been initiated.
Of 143.1 miles of channel improvement planned, 38.1 miles have been
completed and 4.6 miles are under construction.

DESCRIPTION:
The Washita River Watershed consists of 7,871 square miles, or 5,037,536
acres. This does not include some 57,504 acres covered by the Washita
River arm of Lake Texoma. The watershed has been divided into 64
sub-watersheds to facilitate planning and installation of works of improve-.
ment.

The main problem prevalent on this watershed when it was authorized in
1944 was erosion on upland and too frequent flooding of 265,000 acres
of bottomland along the tributaries and 112,000 acres of bottomland on
the main stem of the Washita River. A remedial program including the
coordinated planning. and installation of land treatment and structural
measures was initiated.

(Additional information is available .for the individual sub-watersheds
in the narratives.)

SPONSORS:.
