UNITED STATES
DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR
WATER AND POWER RESOURCES SERVICE
UPPER COLORADO REGION

NOTICE OF INITIATION OF INVESTIGATIONS

Name of investigation: Big Sandy River Unit - Colorado River Water Quality
Improvement Program

Location of investigations: Green River Basin near the towns of Farson and
Eden in southwestern Wyoming.

Date investigations initiated: Feasibility investigations were initiated in
1976. Scheduled date of completion of feasibility report - May 1984.

I. Scope of investigations: The study is concerned primarily with identifying
possible means of controlling total dissolved solids contributions to the
Green River along a IS-mile reach of the Big Sandy River. The study will
be conducted through use of a Professional Services Contract and under the
multi-objective planning guidelines set forth in the Principles and
Standards for planning water and land resources.

r;~

2. Problems: The Big Sandy River originates in the Wind River Mountains of
western Wyoming and flows south and southwesterly to the Green River where
it discharges an estimated 180,OOO tons of dissolved solids annually with
concentrations ranging from 300 to 3,900 mg/L. About 1l0,OOO tons of
salt enter the Big Sandy River annually from numerous saline seeps and
springs located along a l5-mile reach of the river. These flows aggregate
between 25 and 30 cubic feet per second with salt concentration of 3,000
to 5,500 mg/L.

3. Prospective solutions: Prospective solutions will involve plans for
collection and conveyance of saline water, treatment of the saline water,
and disposal of brine effluent. Possible beneficial uses of the saline
water would also be investigated.

4. Participation: Interested parties are requested to forward, within 30 days,
an expression of interest in the investigations to inform us of pertinent
data that can be made available for our use, to furnish comments and sug-
gestions as may be considered appropriate, and express possible interest
in participating on the planning team. Participation in the fish and
wildlife, recreation, and beneficial use aspects of the investigations is
desired of all interested organizations and individuals. In most cases
expenses incurred during participation will not be reimbursable.
Expressions of interest should be sent to the Regional Director, P.O. Box
ll568, Salt Lake City, Utah 84147 or to the Project Manager, Grand Junction
Projects Office, 764 Horizon Drive, Grand Junction, Colorado 81501.

Prepared:

October 1980

Transmitted: October 16, 1980

t~,
~ ~'~"-'<:"

~11 4Jl-./UL

Regional lann1ng Off1cer

Re

U-I 1 i ,-
'J ' .
..~ \... d
