<br />(':) <br />c.., <br />.' <br />c..,') <br />1-'0 <br />i"""' <br />"-1 <br /> <br />10/29/91 <br /> <br />1. 0 PURPOSE <br /> <br />The purpose of the San Juan River Basin Recovery Implementation Program is to <br />protect and recover endangered fishes in the San Juan basin while water <br />development proceeds. Endangered species include the Colorado squawfish and <br />razorback sucker. It is anticipated that actions taken by the Recovery <br />Program also will provide benefits to other native fishes in the San Juan <br />basin and keep them from becoming endangered in the future. <br /> <br />The specific goals of the Recovery Program are: <br /> <br />1. To conserve populations of Colorado squawfish and razorback sucker <br />in the Basin consistent with the recovery goals established under the <br />Endangered Species Act. 16 U.S.C. 1531 et seq. <br /> <br />2. To proceed with water development in the Basin in compliance with <br />federal and state laws, interstate compacts. Supreme Court decrees. and <br />Federal trust responsibilities to the Southern Utes, Ute Mountain Utes. <br />Jicarillas and the Navajos. <br /> <br />The San Juan Basin Recovery Implementation Program is a cooperative effort of <br />the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Bureau of <br />Indian Affairs, the States of Colorado. New Mexico and Utah, tribal <br />governments. local government and private water development interests. and <br />environmental organizations. Participation in the Program does not in any way <br />diminish, detract from. or add to the authorities and responsibilities of the <br />participants. <br /> <br />1.1 RECOVERY OBJECTIVES <br /> <br />General recovery objectives for Colorado squawfish have been identified in the <br />5quawfish Recovery Plan.
