The stream

bottom is composed mostly of sand and gravel. Some boulders averaging

two feet in diameter are also found in the channel.

Upon leaving this narrow valley the West Fork flows out into Commissary

Park where it will merge with the Main Fork to form the Encampment

River.

c. The Encampment River

From the confluence of the Main Fork and the West Fork, the Encampment

River flows northward for 3/4 mile to the Colorado-Wyoming border

where it leaves the study area. This segment of the River varys from

40 to 50 feet in width, two to three feet in depth and drops at a rate

of 45 feet per mile. The stream bottom is composed primarily of rock

and cobbles averaging six to eight inches in diameter. The elevation

of the River at the stateline is 8350 feet. This segment is located

entirely within Commissary Park.

d. Main Fork to the Study Area's Eastern Boundary

The study area's eastern boundary is dominated by 11,422 foot Davis Peak

and Buffalo Ridge. Directly to the east of the Main Fork and the adjacent

river bottom lands, the terrain rises abruptly at an estimated 50% grade
