Tributaries

flowing from the Stwnp Park area enter the Main Fork in this segment.

After leaving the steep valley the Main Fork flows out onto a wide flood

plain where it joins the West Fork to form the Encampment River. The

flood plain forms a wide valley (Commissary Park) averagipg ~ to one.

mile in width. The gradient decreases to approximately 55 feet per

mile and meanders become pronotmced. The stream channel is 40 to 50

feet wide and two to three feet in depth. Stream bottom composition

varies from gravel, particularily in the vicinity of bends, to rocks

and cobbles averaging six to eight inches in diameter.

b. The West Fork of the Encampment River

The West Fork of the Encampment River begins as the outlet of West

Fork Lake. West Fork Lake is a spring fed lake lying at the base of

Buck Mountain at an elevation of 9305.

For approximately l~ miles below the outlet the West Fork flows through

a steep, narrow, wooded valley. The stream channel is from ten to 15

p...,t
feet in width. The stream gradient averages 300.per mile. The depth

varies from riffles a few inches deep to small pools two feet in depth.

.-.-..----...,---
