. ~,

.

.

" (1 .~; ," ~ Q
'- '~ 1..... _ ... ".. -'

. ..

4. The River and Surrounding Topography

The topography within the study area is dominated by three moderately

steep ridges that traverse the area in a south-north direction. The

ridges are seperated by narrow valleys varying in widths of from several

hundred feet upwards to ~ mile through which flows the Main Fork and

the West Fork of the Encampment River.

The three identified ridges are; Buffalo Ridge (including Davis Peak)

which forms the study area's eastern boundary, Black Mountain which

traverses the middle of the study area thus seperating the Main Fork

and West Fork, and an unnamed ridge which seperates the Encampment

River from the South Fork of Hog Park Creek. This unnamed ridge is

the study area's western boundary. The Continental Divide (including

Buck Mountain) is the study area's southern boundary.

At the northern. reach of the study area, Rlack Mountain drops off and

Commissary Park becomes the outstanding feature. Commissary Park

and the surrounding benches average two miles in length and one half to.

one mile in width.

The following is a detailed description of the topographic features

within the study area.
