<br />o <br /> <br />~~ <br />. .. <br /> <br />O:::!'I <br /> <br />C:.' <br /> <br />~....; <br /> <br />...... <br /> <br />The Hood Farm <br /> <br />-' <br /> <br />The Water Conservation Board has completed a third year at the Hood <br />farm. The A,R,S. time operated gates continue to work well in the level <br />ditches with level fields. Many farmers who work at other jobs will find <br />these timed gates a distinct advantage. This system enables the farmer to <br />set his irrigation once a day and irrigate each set with timed precision. <br />The Soil Conservation Service will want to recommend this system in their <br />salinity control program. <br /> <br /> <br />In the north field only, where the supply ditch is on a slope g:rade the <br />time operated gates will back the water up to trigger a pair of float gates. <br />In this manner three boarders are irrigated at one time, ~any times the <br />latches on the float gates would fail to actuate even after considerable <br />modification. Finally Mr. Hood suggested that we use a string to tie the <br />gates together so that the positive action of the timed gate as it fell <br />would pull the latch on the second gate and in like manner the second <br />gate would pull the third. This arrangement has worked without failure. <br />Since this is a unique system here in the valley we will probably not be <br />faced with this problem again, however, this system of gates will work well <br />any where one has a sloping ditch. <br /> <br />We purchased the sulfur for a test plot on the Hood farm. In an area <br />of high salt concentration applications of 0 to 3 tons per acre of elemental <br />sulfur were made, The Agricultural Research Service has been taking samples <br />throughout the summer on these plots and as soon as the analysis is completed <br /> <br />- 1 - <br />
