Study Goals:

The goal of the channel monitoring program is to support the efforts of the Recovery
Program in developing flow recommendations. restoring flooded bottomlands, and
monitoring physical conditions of the rivers in the Upper Colorado River Basin. A
corollary goal is tO'provide status and trend information on river channel morphology
and riparian habitat.

The Service does currently have flow recommendations for the Yampa River, which
are based upon the maintenance of natural hydrographs. The Service does not have
any flow recommendations for the Little Snake River. The Yampa recommendations
have been recently updated and were used as part of the basis for Colorado Instream
Flow Filings in 1995.

The goal of the 1997 channel monitoring effort is to revisit the work accomplished
in the early 1980's by Jim O'Brien in the Deerlodge Park area, and to establish a new
channel monitoring site in the lower 5 miles of the Little Snake River. The work
would be of benefit to the Recovery Program in that it will identify historical trends
and will establish cross sections that can be monitored periodically as a part of the
channel monitoring program.

1
