The Groundwater Quality Task Force, appointed by the Water Quality Control
Commission to study the issues surrounding groundwater quality, has
identified several areas of concern. Included on the list were the
following:

....
-J
tv
....

1) Solid waste disposal,includin2 hazardous waste and surface impoundments.

2) Improperly installed on-lot sewage treatment, including septic tanks,
leach fields, land treatments, etc.

3) Exploratory drill holes associated with mineral development.
4) Abandoned mine shafts which serve as trash and raw sewage receptacles.

r

5) Uranium and other radioactive materials have been identified in several
aquifers in Colorado.

Specific groundwater problems include:

1) Cotter Corporation's uranium mill, located about two (2) miles south of
Canon City. Groundwater pOllution by radionuclides has been detected in
the aquifers in Canon City and the surrounding countryside and in an
area within 3/4 of a mile of the Arkansas River.

2) Rocky Mountain Arsenal, located north of the City & County of Denver.
Contamination of groundwater from by-products of chemical warfare agents
and herbicide/insecticide manufacturing has occurred. Crops in the area
that have been irrigated with contaminated well water have suffered
damage. Contamination has also been discovered in surrounding public
wells; these problems have forced Rocky Mountain Arsenal to install a
groundwater containment system and a comprehensive clean-up/containment
program is now being developed.

3) LaSalle - Hudson area of Weld'County. Black water and methane and
ethane gases have raised concerns over the suitability of these waters
for domestic purposes.

4) Nitrate levels alo02 the South Platte River. The Water Quality Control
Division has cited several municipalities that draw tlleir water from the
Platte River alluvium downstream from Denver for excessive nitrate
levels in their drinking water systems.

5) Northglenn. A leaky gasoline storage tank was responsible for
contaminating shallow groundwater, which leaked into the basements of
homes in the area.

-6-
