Box 25486 <br />Denver Federal Center <br />Denver, CO 80225 <br /> <br />Re: Comments regarding the Draft Management Plan for Endangered Fishes in the <br />Yampa River Basin. <br /> <br />Dear Gerry: <br /> <br />The Colorado Department of Natural Resources, together with the Division of <br />Wildlife and the Colorado Water Conservation Board, have reviewed the above- . <br />mentioned Yampa Plan. <br /> <br />Inasmuch as representatives from the State have participated in most of the <br />decisions spelled out in the Draft Plan, the Department offers primarily stylistic and <br />editing comments for your purposes. <br /> <br />Nonnative Control <br /> <br />Nonnative control has generated likely more controversy than any other in this <br />Recovery Program, and particularly in the Yampa Valley. Colorado urges Program <br />policymakers to review and reexamine nonnative control policy with an eye toward <br />articulating the most effective strategies to protect the endangered fishes while <br />recognizing the concerns and suspicions of the angling community. Program managers <br />need to demonstrate sensitivity to anglers and to state and federal officials who are <br />charged with carrying out and enforcing nonnative control on behalfofthe endangered <br />fishes. <br /> <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />General Comments <br /> <br />Overall: The plan does not address water conservation as a critical component of water <br />supply.
