<br />Ilall (18'31), in his History of Colorado series, puhli5hed in <br />.1891, reported the following: <br /> <br />"for many years a tree which had "ithstood the ravages of <br />nearly four centuries was reverenced by the old settlers as <br />the city's (Pueblo) m05t valuable and poetic landmark. 3eneath <br />this "old monarch", Kit Carson, Buffalo Bill, ,Iild Bill and <br />other noted scouts had built their campfires, and in 1850 <br />thirty-six persons were massacred by the Indians while cam?ing <br />nearby (according to "Colorado Pioneers"), June 25, 1883, the <br />venerable tree was cut do"n.
