Four
alternatives shown in the table were
developed for consideration by the
sponsors. Alternative one considered
an improvement in irrigation manage-
ment by changing the time of set and
aome system improvements; the second
considered more extensive improve-
ments 1n existing systems and manage-
ment of the time of set and flow rates;
the third, the same as alternative 2,
considered changing 5,000 acres to
drip or sprinkler methods of irriga-
tion and management practices includ-
ing cut-back flow rates; and the fourth
program alternative level of on-farm
irri~8tion improvement is a combination
of the other alternatives.

The implementation program needed in
Grand Valley to significantly reduce
aalt loading 1n the river requires
acceleration of on-going USDA programs
and the cooperative effort of federal.
state and local agencies. and private
organizations. Four actions have been
identified as being essential to a
successful implementation program.
These are:

1. A level of federal funding that
provides incentive for voluntary
and accelerated participation by
farm operators.

2. A detailed conservation plan for
each farm,

3. A larger staff in the SCS Field
Office in Grand Junction to service
the accelerated work load.

4. A commitment by each farmer to im-
prove his irrigation system.

00.2'61
!
