~

o
,If:)
C'!
C"-
C

Phoenix, Arizona

Bob Walsh - (602) 261-4327
Public Affairs Officer

FIRST FUNDING AND CONSTRUCTION PLANS FOR NON-INDIAN WATER
DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS CONNECTING TO CAP APPROVED BY RECLAMATION

Conditional approval of three proposals for construction of non-Indian irri-
gation distribution systems for Central Arizona Project (CAP) water was
announced today by Bureau of Reclamation Lower Colorado Regional Director
Bill Pl unwner.

Plummer said the plans approved were those submitted to the Bureau by the
Maricopa-Stanfield Irrigation and Drainage District, the New Magma Irrigation
and Drainage District, and the Central Arizona Irrigation and Drainage
District. The approval was conditional because final construction designs
must still be reviewed and approved by the Bureau.

"These are the first water-user entities to receive approval of their
proposed water distribution systems for receiving CAP water," said Plunnner.

Construction of water distribution and drainage facilities for non-Indian
lands was authorized by the Colorado River Basin Project Act of 1968 to obtain
optimum water development and use through improved efficiency. The costs of
these facilities will be fully repayed through contracts with individual
entities.

To date seven additional entities with plans in various stages of comple-
tion have indicated an interest in using the repayment contract process to
build their distribution systems. Other entities have elected to use private
or municipal funding sources to finance distribution system construction.

Central Arizona Project water deliveries are scheduled to begin in 1985.
The project will deliver an average of about 1.2 million acre-feet of Colorado
River water a year to central Arizona for municipal, industrial, and agricul-
tural use.

# # #
