-J

\

.THE
~.,~~:~~Y

October 30, 1984
Page Two

a) Increase the period of higher flow levels along
the South Platte in the metro area, and

b) Increase the amount of water released during that
period,

Based on the new South Platte River Master Plan, up
to 1500 c.f.s. can be released without limiting the safe
boatability of th~ River. By enacting my two concepts, the
South Platte will have a longer boating_season and become
an ev~n more boatable River. In addition, the excess
storage problem would be eased if not eliminated.

Obviously the concerns of those downstream of Denver
would need to be included. Both irrigation requirements
and avoidance of downstream erosion would have to con-
sidered. The new Phase A South Platte River Master Plan,
compiled by Wright Water Engineers for the Urban Drainage
District has highlighted several areas that address the
same concerns about which I'm writing.

Over the past decade, I have been fortunate to
develop a positive working relationship with your
Department, as well as the Army Corp. of Engineers, in
addressing the needs of the recreational aspects of the
Platte River Greenway. I look forward to the continuance
of that relationship, as well as the possibility of
reducing the excess storage problem in Bear Creek and
Chatfield reservoirs, while increasing the boatability of
the South Platte River.

Please contact me at your convenience to set up a
meeting when we can discuss this matter. I look forward to
hearing from you soon.

ely,

JS:rch

/

C~.
- .

Scott Tucker
Ken Wright

PLATTE RIVER GREENWAY FOUNDATION

1666 S, UNIVERSITY BOULEVARD, DENVER, COLORADO 80210

(303) 698-1322
