The cities

having populations in 1970 greater than 5,000 are listed in the Table, along

with the 1970 population. Seventy-two percent of the cities in the Upper

Colorado Region have populations of les.s than 500, and only nine _ percent

of the cities had populations greater than 2,000. Less than thr.ee percent

had populations greater than 5,000. Farmington, New Mexico is the largest

city in the Upper Colorado Region with a 1970 population of 2l, 979.

The Lower Region is also sparsely populated, having an average density

of about l4 persons per square mile. This is a density of almost five times

greater than that found in the Upper Colorado Region. In 1970 there were

33 cities in the Lower Region with populations greater than 5,000. Ten of

the 33 cities had populations greater than 20,000 and six cities had populations

that exceeded 50,000. A summary of the number of towns by the ranges

of population size in each of the six OBERS Regions (See Figure III-LO )

is shown in Table III- 4.

The cities having 1970 populations greater that

5,000 are also shown in the Table, along with the populations. Sixty-eight

percent of the cities in the Lower Colorado Region have populations of

les s than 500, and only six percent of the cities had populations greater

than 2,000. Approximately six percent of the cities had populations greater

than 5,000 and less than 1. 5 percent had populations greater than 50,000.

Three metropolitan areas had populations in excess of lOO, 000. These were

Phoenix, Arizona; Tucson, Arizona; and Las Vegas, Nevada. Phoenix is

the largest city in the Colorado System with a population of 582,500 in 1970.

41
