w
00
c.T1
l-'-

,

is essentially a consumer of water produced im the upper basin states.

Full development of the land resources in the upper basin and the lower basin

,

might change the cha~ter:of the river'..from that of a water supply to that

of a water disposal system. Under these circumstances the water supply

"

for the total area. would be carried in man-made channels and the river

would function as a drain. Development of the agricultural resources of

the area will require full and complete utilization, not only of the water in

"

the Colorado River, but water from possible other sources as well.

RangEoland. Rangeland is a land use classification which includes several

"

specific non-forested vegetation types. Rangeland mayor may not be used

as a grazing area for wild and domest~cated animals. Rangelands are

neither irrigated nor tilled and rely on precipitation to supply native

..

vegetation is done by grazing wild and domestic animals. The Framework

Study (Appendix VI, 1971) characterizes the 37,500,000 acres of Upper

Basin rangelands into areas of four specific vegetal communities; namely

..

(l) Grass, (2) Northern Desert Shrub, (3) Southern Desert Shrub, and

(4) Salt Desert Shrub. Table 11-2 shows the rangeland figures for the

..

Upper Colorado River Basin, Figure ilI- 5 is a location map for rangeland

in the Upper Colorado River Basin.

Lower Basin rangelands are divided into three vegetal communities;

..

namely (l) Grassland, (2) Norlhern Desert Shrub, and (3) Southern Desert

Shrub. Rangeland in the Lower Colorado River Basin occupies 57,586,000

acres. Table 111-2 shows the distribution of rangeland in the Lower

..

32

..
