Several of these diversions have operated

for many years and in 1965 the diversions totaled 513,000 acre-feet.

There is one small diversion into the region from the East Fork of the

Sevier River in southern Utah averaging 2,600 acre-feet per year.

As of 1967 there were 117 storage reservoirs in the region having

usable capacities of greater than 1,000 acre-feet and a total usable capa-

city of more than 29 million acre-feet. A tabulation of the location and

usable capacity of these reservoirs in contained in Appendix III-A. The

large reservoirs built by the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation since 1960 are

parts of the Upper Colorado River Storage Project and are mainly intended

to store water for satisfying allocations to the Lower Colorado River Basin

while allowing additional local use of water from some of the headwater streams.

Hydroelectric power generation and recreation are other important benefits

provided by the storage reservoirs.

Flows of the Green River are presently (l972) regulated mainly by

the Fontenelle and Flaming Gorge dams. The Navajo dam provides the

primary regulation of the San Juan River. The Blue Mesa dam provides

some storage on the Gunnison River and additional storage is provided by

the remainder of the Curecanti Dams of the U. S Bureau of Reclamation.
