q;')
r;a
V?
....-j
:-:')
":;J

The intensive management of the existing and developed wetlands and wetland
habitat would also be of benefit to bird species of high Federal interest and
other water birds. An increase of about 25 use-days per acre per season is
anticipated on Alamosa NWR, a total of about 109,350 use-days/season. Benefits
from this enhanced use is estimated to amount to 2,000 man-days per season of
wildlife-oriented recreation.

B. Blanca WllA

Other water birds use would be expected to increase by about 4,950 use-days per
season and would include use by bird species of high Federal interest. An esti-
mated 500 man-days per year of wildlife-oriented recreation would also result
from the maintenance and improvement of existing wetland habitat.

C. Head Lake and Associated Wetlands

Approximately 700 acres of wetlands at Head Lake and the area between Head and
San Luis Lakes would be developed and maintained by the use of 6 ft3/s of pro-
ject water delivered into Head Lake. The development of this area would occur
provided that the State of Colorado agrees to replace increased evaporation and
seepage losses resulting from this development. This development would enhance
waterfowl production by about 1,344 ducks per year and hunter-days by 232. Net
benefits associated with this increase would amount to $2,204 annually. Wildlife-
oriented recreation would also increase by about 1,000 use-days/season with net
benefits of about $2,000 annually.

D. San Luis Lake

San Luis Lake would be stabilized at 890 surface acres. The lake would support a
high quality combination cold-warm water fishery. In addition to the general
recreation uses, the lake would support about 40,000 fisherman-days use annually
with net benefits of about $100,000.

E. Russell Lakes Waterfowl Management Area (WMA)

Replacement and development of existing and new wetlands and wetland habitat in
the Russell Lakes WMA would increase and enhance waterfowl production annually
by about 2,595 birds. Use of the 2,998 acres of wetlands by other water birds
and species of high Federal interest would be enhanced by about 74,950 use-days
per season annually.

F. Conveyance Channel Fishery and Waterfowl Production

Water quality of the pumped water is expected to be suitable to develop and
maintain 42 miles of cold-water fishery in the conveyance channel. The fishery
would be maintained by annual stocking by the Colorado Division of Wildlife.
A maximum of 10 access points at project constructed bridges would be provided
under the provisions of Public Law 89-72. Fisherman use of the channel is

19
