MWSI Project
Phase II Conjunctive Use Summary Report - DRAFT

August 22, 1995

Peaking reservoirs could be located anywhere between the surface water system delivery
point and the conjunctive use demands. The best location, however, is likely to be near to the
conjunctive use well field and the conjunctive use demands.

Colleclion and Dislribulion Pipelines
Additional components of the conjunctive use system would include collection pipelines,
distribution pipelines and water treatment plants,

The well field system would include a network of collection system piping. The
collection system piping would bring groundwater supplies to a central location or locations for
storage in the local peaking reservoir, payback delivery to the surface water system, or for use
within the conjunctive use demand area, The collection system piping would also deliver surface
water in excess of current demands to the well field for recharge,

The distribution system is the network of water supply mains that would deliver
conjunctive use demands either from groundwater or surface water sourcrs depending on the
current supply source, Hence, the distribution piping must be able to receive and deliver flows
from both sources and from the local peaking reservoir.

Waler Trealment

There are a number of options for treatment under a conjunctive use plan, In the event of
raw water deli veries from both surface and groundwater systems, an efficient plan would be to
construct one local treatment plant near the area of the conjunctive use demands, A second
option would be a separate treatment plant for groundwater which would be directly connected to
the well field and would treat the portion of groundwater which would be fed directly to the
distribution system, The treatment plant at the reservoir would then treat only those flows which
become "surface waters,"

This plan offers advantages in that treatment of surface water supplies is much more
extensive and costly than the treatment of groundwater supplies and hence there would be
operation and maintenance benefits with separate systems.

One potential issue that would should be studied further is the mixing of groundwater and
surface water supplies to determine and potential problems with water chemistry. This applies to
both treated and raw water supplies.

Surface Waler/Groundwaler lnlerlies
The last major component of the conjunctive use system would be the water-system
Interties to allow for delivery of surface flows to the groundwater system and for groundwater
flows to the surface water system, Available locations for these interties can be critical to
controlling pipeline costs associated with a conjunctive use plan,

35
