MWSI Project
Phase II Conjunctive Vse Summary Report - DRAFT

August 22, 1995

tributary or not nontributary requires augmentation of pumping and post-pumping stream
depletions. These augmentation requirements impose a limitation on the development of
tributary and not nontributary water when the groundwater developer does not have surface water
rights or other augmentation water to make up the depletions from groundwater pumping.

The conjunctive use project which is discussed in detail in the next section requires a
large well field for dry-year groundwater production and wet-year groundwater injection.
Withdrawals from the wellfield will be detennined by existing Water Court decrees or if the
water is not currently decreed by Senate Bill 5-type decrees which will be obtained.

Artificial Recharge Technical Issues

Local Aquifer Recharge Projects

Centennial Water and Sanitation District (Centennial) and Willows Water District
(Willows) have completed studies and perfonned field work related to evaluating the injection
and recovery of water in the Arapahoe aquifer. Willows has previously financed its own work
and is currently involved in the Denver Basin Aquifer Recharge Demonstration Project which is
being perfonned in conjunction with the Colorado State Engineer's Office (SED), Denver Water,
and Parker Water and Sanitation District. The work is funded in part by the V,S, Bureau of
Reclamation (USBR) in cooperation with the V.S, Geological Survey (USGS), the V,S,
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the V,S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS).
Willows first started their work in 1988, Centennial has funded their work which was started in
1991.

The concept behind injection and recovery programs is to use excess water treatment
plant and well field capacity in low demand periods to treat and inject surface water which is
available during these times, The injected and stored water is withdrawn during periods of peak
demand through existing wells, The injection and recovery programs are primarily storage
projects, The advantages of the program are more efficient use of surface water supplies, existing
water treatment plant facilities, and wells.

Willows Demonstration Project

Willows first perfonned Arapahoe aquifer injection and recovery work in 1988 and
continued in 1989. This work was funded by Willows and supported by Denver Water who
supplied the surface water for injection, This injection work was perfonned at Well A-5.

Baseline well, aquifer and water quality tests were perfonned on Well A-5 prior to
injection. Water was first injected at Well A-5 in February of 1989, A total of 40,93 af was
injected into Well A-5 over five injection periods and 1.14 afwas pumped from A-5 over seven
pumping periods in 1989,

,_<L_
