:" ~ ,t, ,..t..>

ALTERNATE USES OF WATER
l)O;j~Z3 Durirtg periods of extreme drought, the numerous

'.

functional uses of water are in competition for

the limited supplies. In addition to water for hydro-

electric power generation, water may be required for

municipal and industrial purposes, irrigation, cooling

of thermal power plants, navigation, and maintenance of

streamflow~ for water quality, fish and wildlife, and
esthetic purposes. Publicly-owned multiple-purpose
water resource facilities will be operated on a day-to-
day basis to meet the region's most critical needs.

Operations ~hat are different from normal may, or may not,

be beneficial to hydroelectric power generation. As reservoirs

are drawn dbwn, the head is reduoed with a consequent reduction

in power production. Areas that normally use gravity-fed

surface wat$r supplies for irrigation may resort to pumping

of groundwater with a consequent increase in energy loads.

Water needs ;for hydroelectric energy production may not be

given very high priority if they are in conflict with other

needs such as potable water supplies, irrigation, etc. The

assumption m?y be made that electric energy can be obtained

from other sources whereas the sources of water for more

direct human needs are relatively limited. It is probable

that water management for other functions could adversely

impact on electric energy production in the Pacific Northwest.

49

.<;,. ..<c ".~.. ~'"

;~j;j'",~~,~j

~ '" ' ~ ,

~I~{0ifi:~
,~~...
