Coachella Canal Lining

Until the desalting complex becomes
operational, the United States will not
receive treaty credit for the Well ton.
Mohawk drainage water which is now being
diverled around Morelos Dam into the Gulf.
Water stored in upstream reservoirs of the
Colorado River is now being used and will
continue to be used during the
construction period to help meet treaty
requirements. A portion of this loss will be
recovered by replacing the first 49 miles of
the Coachella Canal with a concrete-lined
canal. An annual savings of almost 132,000
acre. feet of water, currently being lost
through seepage, will result from the lining
project. California will eventually benefit
from the salvaged Coachella water, after
the desalting complex is in operation.

Ground Water Pumping
The third phase of Title I legislation
establishes a protective and regulatory
ground.water pumping program for a strip
of land along the border in the vicinity of
San Luis. Each country will limit pumping
to no more than 160,000 acre.feet annually
from a designated area extending 5 miles
from each side 01 the Arizona-Sonora
boundary. The United States will be able to
supply from its share of the ground water
most of the 140,000 acre. feet historically
delivered as treaty water to Mexico across
the Arizona.Sonora border. Much of this
United States water is now being lost to
Mexico in underground flow. A smaller
portion of the pumped water will be
available to Arizonans for agricultural and
other uses.

Imperial 0.1'11 .nd Re...rvoir.

. ..------. ^
. - ..... . .......It..
~........~'

'"

./' , l ...
'. . .
.
.~ .- - ..
. . .
.
