'1896

.

between the Pueblo Board of Water Works and the City of Aurora. The
Project imported 13,450 acre-feet of water through the Boustead Tunnel
during water year 1988.

Turquoi se Lake storage was near capac ity throughout the ent i re year.
Exhibits 7 and 8 show the precipitation and pan evaporation at Turquoise
Lake. The water year ended with a conte:nt of 127,930 acre-feet in
storage.

Table 5 and exhibit 9 show the operation of Turquoise Lake during the
water year 1988.

F. Mt. Elbert Conduit/Ha1fmoon Creek Diversion

During water year 1988, 56,080 acre-feet of water were released
from Turquoise Lake and 7,460 acre-feet of water diverted at
Ha1fmoon CreekDiversion through Mt. Elbert d:onduit to Mt. Elbert Forebay
(exhibit 10). In addition, 2,940 acre-feet: of water were released into
Mt. Elbert conduit from Turquoise Lake for use by the Leadville federal
fish hatchery.

G. Twin Lakes/Mt. Elbert Forebay and Mt. Elbert Pumped-Storage
Powerp1ant

On September 30, 1987, the lake surface elevation of Twin Lakes was
9193.03 feet with a content of 122,640 acr~-feet of water. Mt. Elbert
Forebay water surface elevation was at 963~.54 feet with a content of
7,690 acre-feet. Exhibits 11 and 12 show the precipitation and pan
evaporation at Twin Lakes.

Twi n Lakes was operated throughout the year bypass i ng a 11 nat i ve
inflow and through May drawi ng water out of storage for the City of
Colorado Springs. Beginning in June, the; reservoir was refilled by
transferri ng Project water, whi ch wou 1 d have norma 11y been transferred
to Pueb 10 Reservoi r, from Turquoi se Lake j nto Twi n Lakes. Water was
,retained upstream because the available spa~e in Twin Lakes and because
Pueblo Reservoir had remained full until late July. The higher
evaporation rate in Pueblo Reservoir was also considered when making the
decision to leave the water in Twin Lakes throuqhout the remainder of
the water year. Table 6 and exhibit 13' show -Twin Lakes/Mt. Elbert
Forebay operation for water year 1988.

Mt. Elbert Pumped-Storage Powerp1ant ha~ at least one unit available
throughout the water year. The powerp1ant had 63,540 acre-feet of flow
through water available along with 449,17ID acre-feet of water pumped
from Twin Lakes. The powerp1ant generated 182,807,000 kilowatt-hours
during water year 1988 with 504,810 acre-feet of water (table 7).

Twin Lakes/Mt. Elbert Forebay combined stora,ge totaled 135,190 acre-feet
at the end of the water year. Twi n Lakes storage was 126,780 acre-feet
and Mt. Elbert Forebay was 8,410 acre-feet.

10

.

.
