<br />The YDP, the central feature of the works
<br />authorized by Title I, is located on a 60-acre
<br />tract ofland 6 miles west of Yuma, Arizona.

<br />Process Selection
<br />
<br />Public Law 93-320 stipulated thatthe YDP
<br />use an advanced, commercially available
<br />desalting process. As a result, applicable
<br />technologies were narrowed to (1) dis-
<br />tillation processes and (2) ionic processes
<br />
<br />(ion exchange, electrodialysis, and reverse
<br />osmosis). Electrodialysis and reverse
<br />osmosis processes were selected fQr further
<br />testing because of their projected lower
<br />overall costs. Both processes use semi-
<br />permeable membranes to remove ionic
<br />constituents from the water.
<br />
<br />From 1974 to 1978, a variety of electro-
<br />dialysis and reverse osmosis processes
<br />were tested at the Yuma Desalting Test
<br />Facility (YDTF). (See chapter V, "Desalting
<br />Research and Development.") The primary
<br />objectives of the testing were (1) to provide
<br />data for Reclamation and the manu-
<br />facturers on desalting equipment,
<br />(2) to provide information for evaluating
<br />
