The first <br />several 'weeks wou1dbetheperiodof..thestudY that would best reflect <br />conditions during the recreation season, as well as during the irriga- <br />tion season. The difference in the two mean values reflects the large <br />increase in the number of bacteri a 1 groups present duri ng the October <br />samplings. <br /> <br />A comparison of the results of the survey with the current water <br />quality standards for the State indicates that samples taken during <br />the late recreation season (August 24-september26) meet the water <br />quality standards for total and fecal coliforms. However, the feqa1 <br />. streptococcus standard was not met at any time during the survey.. In <br />addition, the coliform standards were also exceeded during October, <br />with the exception of that for feci;ll coliformsat the Narrows site. <br />Conclusions drawn from the results of the survey were that the proposed <br />reservoir would meet the co1 iform standards duri ng the recreation <br />season, but not the standard for fecal streptococci. Therefore, on the <br />basis of the current standards, specifically the fecal streptococcus <br />standard, the reservoir cou1dnotbe"c'}assified as being suitable for <br />primary contact recreation. <br /> <br /> <br />Recently the validity of the use of fecal streptococci as indicators <br />of human fecal contamination has been seriously questioned. This is <br />because of the large number of streptococci of limited sanitary sig- <br />nificance that are propagated on the culture medi urn. The American <br />Public Health Association (APHA) (1975) and previously the National <br />Academy of Sciences (1973) have recommended that sanitary surveys be <br />conducted when there is evidence of fecal contamination due to the <br />results of fecal streptococci cultures.
