l

.,"~
~~~;;
....
....
CJ1
....
on-farm systems and management are improved, irrigat~on scheduling
alone will have very little effect in deep percolation reduction.
It appears that too much emphasis has been placed oni the Bureau's
IMS and Water Systems Improvement programs and too little on on-farm
improvements.
~: Additional information on on farm improvements have been added
rn-chapter I, section B.3.c. Irrigation Source Control. We agree that
the on farm improvements could have been covered more thoroughly. We
also hope to emphasize the IMS program in actual practice because
without it, the program would probably not succeed.
8. Comment: The work of the Agricultural Research Service on the
practicality of precipitating salts from irrigation water in the soil
should be included.
Reply: A reference to ARS research work has been added as suggested.
See chapter I, section C.S. Irrigation Efficiency Studies.
9. Comment: Page 1-28, last paragraph. - It appears that the last
paragraph ,intended to eliminate cation exchange from large-scale
studies. This should be clarified.
~;;~~~r$
~~: The last paragraph does not intend to explain the specifics
~e ion exchange process. Additional details on process limita-
tions will be presented in future reports.
10. Comment: Page 1-30, paragraph 4. - We believe the information
concerning the SCS on this page is inadequate and should be revised
to read as follows: "Since the middle 1930's the Soil Conservation
Service has been assisting landowners in controlling soil erosion and
managing their water resources. This assistance includes co~serva-
tion planning and application of conservation practices, including
irrigation practices to improve on-farm irrigation efficiencies. In
recent years, on-farm irrigation improvements have been emphasized as
an important method of reducing salt contribution to the river from
irrigated land." Also, there is little mention of the extensive Agri-
cultural Research Service Program being conducted at Grand Valley,
Colorado, on irrigation and salinity management.
Reply: The suggested revision has been accommodated in the text as
requested. See chapter I, section C.S. Irrigation Efficiency Studies.
<~f~;~
16
