00lG74

Municinal ~i8ter

Municipal water supplies on the Western Slope are ade~uate in both

quality and quantity. In the Eastern Slope area, hO\,ever, the quantity

of municipal water is barely adequate for present demands. The quality

at towne along the Arkansas Hiver from Pueblo eastward is very poor

because of excessive hardness. Practically all water in the Arkansas

Valley requires softening for boiler use. Several municipalities are

in need of addi tional

water supplies immediately. In order to meet the
.A'l ,",:i((r-I, ,,'-tf I
requires 5,000 acre-feet, Colorado Springs 4,000
"

present demand Pueblo

acre-feet and the various tOWllR down'the Arkansas Valley below Pueblo,

8,000 acre-fest. 1'ifty- years hence it is anticipated that these require-

ments will be increased to

acre-feet for Pueblo,

acre-feet for Colorado Springs, and

acre-feet for the valley-

towns. All municipalities are in need of better quality water.

Although exieting indQ"tries are not suffering acute shortages, addi-

tional industrial development iR limited so far as water is concerned.

~lootl Control
Only two major flood control projects have been constructed on the

Eastern Slope, none on the Western Slope. The larger of the two Eastern

Slope projects is the John Mro'tin Reservoir, constructed by the War Depart-

ment, on the Arkansa,s Rivp.r about 16 miles above Lam1l.r which is desir, ned

to reduce or alleviate all floods beyond that point to Great Bend, Kansae.

Of its total original capacity of 701,000 acre-feet, 420,000 acre-feet

h.ave been alloce.ted to irrigation UG" and 2/l1,OOO acre-feet to flood

cont.rol. The other major flood control project consists of a barrier
dam across the Arkansas RiVEr about 6 miles west of Pueblo and an

24
