It would divert an annual 69,200 acre,feet
of water from thet western to the eastern slope, reregulate
approximately 110,000 acre-feet of Arkansas River water,
aid 322,000 acres of irrigated land, develop additional
hydroelectric power and other benefits, and supplement
domestic water supplies in Arkansas valley cities and
towns, including Pueblo and Colorado Springs.

Physically, the plan includes:

I. A system. of 50 miles of canals and tunnels On
the western slope for collection of water from Hunter
creek and the Frying Pan river, tributaries of the Roaring
Fork river. The diversion area, located within the boun-
daries bf the White River national forest at elevations
above 10,000 feet. is mountainous and primitive.

2. Construction of the Aspen reservoir with an
active storage cal'acity of 28,000 acre,feet on the Roaring
Fork river near the town of Aspen on the western slope.

3. Construction of the Frying Pan,Arkansas tunnel,
about six miles in length and at 10,000 feet altitude thru
the Continental Divide for diverting water collected on
the western slope to the eastern slope. The tunnel would
be the highest ever built by the Bureau of Reclamation;

4. On the eastern slope, three earth-fill dams, 60
miles of power canal, over 10 miles of diversion canals,
seven hydroelectric power plants and switch yards, three
small forebays and twoafterbays, nine substations and
about 400 miles of transmission lines, and a municipal
water supply system.

<?f

~""

~~::~s ~<- -\:j-~;-~:~/~

~'<"'-,:;::.;_-,~?'i;<::i?>:~: .

,,,.>;.'. .~-
',', -'"':--.,,

:...../:
<:-~~<~ '<..{::.,}~~.:::~:.~:--,- ....: ,..1 '. . i ,;
"'.- ,': ,'.
