A survey of plant equipment by Bechtel Corporation was started in preparation for the proposed change from 50 to 60 cycle power by the Southern California Edison Com- pany. Due to required shutoffs of natural gas for industrial service at times of heavy domestic demalld in cold periods. it was necessary to challge over to fuel oil for the carbon dioxide boiler for a total of 27 days during the year. On January 16, 194~ all bids received for construction of the tirst expansion of the water softening alld tiltration plant were opened_ The cOlltract for this work was awarded to the L. E- Dixon Com- pany on January 23, 1948. Cleaning of the construction area was started Oll February 11 and excavation Oll February 16. Since the softening plallt was origillally desiglled with provisions included for increased capacity through future plant expansion. 110 interference with plant operation has so far resulted from the construction pro- gram_ Following the reopening of the plant to visitors ill June 1946, many hUlldreds of individuals, as well as student and industrial groups, clubs and civic organizations, have taken advantage of this service to the public. The number of visitors to the plant during the tiscal year exceeded 2200 persons_ Chemicals for plant operation A total of 915 carloads of chemicals was delivered to and unloaded at the softening plallt for use in the softening process_ The difficulty in procuring lime had eased to the extent that bids could be obtained and a one-year contract awarded for delivery of this chemical in sufficient quantity to meet plant requirements_ The cost was approx- imately three times the cost under the original tive-year contract. Alum was found to be in short supply and difficulties were expe- rienced on several occasions in obtaining delivery in time to meet plant needs_ The need for soda ash was very limited alld 110 purchases of this chemical were required durillg the tiscal year. Deliveries of sodium chloride necessary for regeneration of the zeolite softeners were contillued under the three-year contract awarded during the preceding tiscal year. Zeolite investigations Observation and allalysis of softener unit operation and zeolite efficiellcy were continued with the purpose of increasing the useful life of the exchange mineral and decreasing salt consumption_ 80-
