."168
(.., -
24 METROPOLITAN WATER DISTRICT

Salt investigations

The operation and maintenance forces carried on additional
experimental work in the vicinity of Danby Dry Lake where the
District controls rock salt and brine deposits under a pending U. S.
Government lease. The experimental evaporation basin started last
year was completed in July 1947. This ba,,;n is an acre in area and
lies in the extreme northeasterly corner of Sec. 22, T_2N_, R.17E.,
S.B.M_ Brine was pumped into the basin from time to time up to
November 25, 1947, by means of a 3-inch pump and 860 feet of
6-inch steel pipe. At that time the remaining brine was pumped
from the basin to prevent the precipitation of sodium sulfate. In
January 1948 the salt deposit in the basin was smoothed and packed
using a D-4 tractor and scraper. In the original construction of the
basin, no special effort was put forth to make the basin impervious
other than some selection of materials used in the dikes. Seepage
had been observed in the basin, so repair work was done to one
side by excavating. placing new material and compacting with a
sheepsfoot roller. When this work was completed, brine was again
pumped into the basin.
Construction of a second. larger experimental evaporating basin
was started in February and completed in April 1948 by District
forces using a tractor and carryall. sheepsfoot roller, and water
truck. This second basin covers an area of about 2 acres and has
dikes 5 feet high with 3 to 1 side slopes_ The new basin was filled
with brine in April 1948. It has been found to be much more
impervious than the first basin. A new test well was dug in the
northwest cornel' of the N.W_ 1/~ of the N.W. 1/4 of Section 22,
T.2N., R.17E.. S_B.M. Also. test holes were drilled in Sections
16.21, 24. 25, and 26_ Samples of the brine and salt have been sent
periodically to the laboratory at the softening and filtration plant
for analysis.

Delivery "f water to the Arm 1/

Natural Colorado River water was supplied from Lake Mathews
to the United States Army at Camp Haan during the entire fiscal
year_ The maximum monthly delivery was 17_9 acre feet in August
1947. the minimum 2_3 in March 1948. and the total for the ,-em'
87_5 acre feet.
