Sherman, Executive Director - Department of <br />Natural Resources. 1845 Sherman Street - Room 231 <br />Denver, Colorado 80203 <br /> <br />FROM: Robert McCabe, Water Resource Specialist <br /> <br />DATE: May 5, 1975 <br /> <br />SUBJECT: Use of State Land For The Closed Basin Project <br /> <br />Acquisition of land and rights-of-way for the Closed <br />Basin Project are spelled out in the Bureau of Reclamation's report <br />titled "Closed Basin Division, San Luis Valley Project, Colorado." <br />The report recommends the acquisition of all lands within the <br />water salvage area and also any lands bordering well installations <br />that might be adversely affected. A 200 foot right-of-way will <br />also be acquired for the conveyance channels where they lie out- <br />side the salvage area acquisitions. Necessary lands will be <br />acquired near San Luis Lake (800 acres of state land) for a recre- <br />ational development and also lands for the Mishak Lakes National <br />wildlife Refuge (1640 acres of state land) as a part of the project. <br />The necessary land will be acquired sufficiently in advance of con- <br />struction to insure that rights will be in possession prior to <br />solici tation of construction bids. C ~ :: 1. ~::. <br /> <br />The land acquisition will involve about 61,000 acres of <br />state owned land. According to the project report these lands <br />will be made available to the project at no cost to the federal <br />government as Colorado's share in the cost of the project. The <br />Rio Grande Water Conservation District is currently preparing a <br />map showing the location and status of all state lands within <br />the boundaries of the proposed project. <br /> <br />As of this date no formal arrangemenmhave been made <br />with the Land Board for the acquisition of these 61,000 acres. <br />The majority of these state lands are currently held under graz- <br />
