.

-~~~
~J~'.

2. Source of Water

The water to be carried by the Fountain Valley Conduit will be
Fryingpan-Arkansas Project water bought from the Southeastern
Colorado Water Conservancy ~istrict of which the recipients are
all members. This water for the most part originates in the
Hunter Creek and Fryingpan River of the Roaring Fork Basin in the
Pacific drainage and from the Arkansas River in the Atlantic
drainage.

3. Groundwater

Aquifers in the area of the Fountain Valley Conduit alinement are
alluvial deposits. The principal alluvial aquifers are found in
the Fountain Valley and in the valleys of the larger tributaries
to the FO\ffitain, mostly within an old Fountain Creek stream channel
eroded in the shale bedrock and filled with alluvial deposits.
In addition to the younger deposits which occupy the present
stream channels, older windblown and terrace deposits overlying
consolidated rock formations often present conditions suitable
for a perched water table at that contact.

In the Pueblo West area at the lower end of the alinement some
groundwater is produced from the Dakota Sandstone formation.

.

4. Water Use in Colorado Springs - Other Recipients

Colorado Springs - The rapid population expansion of Colorado Springs
is reflected in the record of historic water use. Because of the
continual need to expand the supply of Colorado Springs' water,
many sources have been utilized. Table 111-1 shows the growth of
water use by the city of Colorado Springs for the years 1969-1974,
broken down by sources of water.

other Recipients - The City of Fountain obtains its water supply
from Little Fountain Creek and wells in the alluvial aquifer of
Fountain Creek with approximately 50 percent of its total water

III-II

.
