Test drilling and test <br />pumping of wells in the area north of the river was initiated during <br />October and will be completed during November. This work is part of the <br />ground and surface water studies of the closed area to the north of the <br />Rio Grande in the San Luis Valley, the purpose being to determine the <br />transmissibility, etc. of the aquifers in order that knowledge may be <br />gained of the movement and volume of the ground water which underlies the <br />irrigated lands in this division. During the month Messrs. Lane, Thomas, <br />and Pemberton of the Denver office visited the project for the purpose of <br />making ahr~_onna~ssance of existing canals, the character of the beds, the <br />slope, ~Agf'i radius, etc. with a view to making studies that will <br />lead to more efficient canal design by the Bureau of Reclamation. The <br />project agreed to undertake a small amount of work along the above lines <br />nrovided funds for such work were made available from Denver office funds. <br /> <br />Weminuche Pass Division <br /> <br />There were no activities in connection with this division during the <br />month of October. <br /> <br />Closed Basin Division <br /> <br />Work in the Closed Basin Division continued as scheduled, the work <br />being the regular observation of the elevation of the ground water at <br />numerous observation wells and the maintenance of surface water stream <br />flow recordings. <br /> <br />Cone.ios Divi.sion <br /> <br />The construction work by Hinman Brothers Construction Company continued <br />through October, the rate of progress being satisfactory to the Construction <br />Engineer. Judge Thomas of the District Court in and for Conejos County <br />appointed a commission composed of Mr. Finley, Mr. Jenkins, and Mr. Garcia <br />to hear testimony concerning certain mining claims in the condemnation suit <br />brought by the Conejos Water Conservancy District. The Project Engineer <br />escorted the above-named gentlemen over the nroperties in question and a <br />hearing at which the commission will hear all testimon1 concerning the <br />lands to be acquired has been Bet for November 12, 1949. <br /> <br />General <br /> <br />r. ....
