PURPOSE

BACKGROUND

The purpose of the study was to determine a
feasible plan to reduce the salt contribution to
the Colorado River from mineral springs In two
areas, one near the town of Glenwood Springs and
the other near the rural community of Dotsero. The
Clenwood-Dotsero Springs Unit constitutes the
second largest point source of salinity to the
Colorado River. The combined discharges annually
contribute approximately 25,000 acre-feet of water
containing about 430.000 tons of salt. About half

Studies of the Glenwood-Dotsero Springs Unit were
conducted under the 1972 Federal l~ater Pollution
Control Act (Public Law 92-500). the 1974 Colorado
River Basin Salinity Control Act (Public Law
93-320), and the 1 t)RO Water Resource Developments
Feasibility Investigations Act (Public Law 96-375).
Salt-loading mechanisms were determined and optimum
measures to reduce the salt enterin~ the Colorado
River were identified.
