Effects of the project on upland gllJJle will be negligible;
the small amount of habitat destroyed by reservoir inundation and canal
construction will not be significant.
40. There will be some reduction of waterfowl habitat, if stream-
flows are not sufficient to maintain beaver ponds and adjacent wetlands.
Water level fluctuations in Homestake Reservoir will be detrimental to
waterfowl nesting areas near the reservoir. Arry increase in available
resting areas during high water period will be of little value, as
Homestake Lake is only lightly utilized.

Fur-e.Di_l Resources

Populations
41. Species of fUr animals in the Eagle-!rkansas project area
are beaver, coyote, gray fox, and weasel. Of these, beaver is the
only speoies present in sufficient numbers to be of any importance,
Beavers are abundant on most of the suitable habitat within the proj-
ect area. Workings are most extensive on Homestake Creek, especially
in Gold Park and upstream from Homestake Lake.
Harvest
42. There has been no connnercial harvest of beaver. Animals
were removed only when they becllJJle a nuisance by flooding roads or
meadows. Colorado will have an open season for beaver in 1956.,
Regulations regarding the number of animals to be removed from eaoh
drainage, dates of season or seasons, etc., will be determined after
the Colorado GIlJJle and Fish Department has made the necessary investi-
gations.

""
