Several species of game animals are present in the area to
be affected by the Eagle-Arkansas project. Big-game species include
mule deer, black bear, and elk. Upland-game species are dusky grouse,
cottontail, and snowshoe hare. Ducks are the only waterfowl present.
Habitat
30. The general project area is typical SUllJl'ller range for mule
deer and elk. Bears also frequent parts of the area. Vegetative
cover ranges .from lodgepole pine at lower elevations to Engelmann
spruce and alpine fir at higher elevations, with occasional stands
of aspen interspersed. Shrubs, forbs, and grasses provide forage
for deer and elk:
31. At the lower elevations, in the lodgepole-pine type and
along the brush-bordered streams, the vegetative cover and forage
plants satisfY the habitat requirements of both the snowshoe hare
and the oottontail. These requirements are not provided in the
higher elevations.
32. Homestake Lake and numerous beaver ponds on some of the
streams prOVide suitable nesting habitat and resting areas for
waterfowl.

Populations
33. Big-game populations in the project area are small in com-
parison to those of nearby areas. Populations of upland-game species
