<br />000602 <br /> <br />(3) Stations on regulated streams, shown on figure 9. <br /> <br /> <br />(4) Long-term trend stations, shown on figure 10. <br /> <br />The proposed networks Include nine new stations on principal streams <br />and six new stations on minor streams. The records for the new stations on <br />minor streams coupled with records for about 25 existing stations will' <br />eventually permit reglonalization of flow characteristics for all minor <br />streams Including those with drainage areas less than ISO sq ml and those <br />with unusual combinations of physical and climatic characteristics. <br /> <br />The stations in the proposed networks are all shown In table 3; the 19 <br />existing stations that are not recommended for continuation are identified <br />by brackets. Frequent appraisal of the networks Is recommended In light of <br />changes In needs for current-purpose data or as additional goals for sta- <br />tistical flow characteristics are met. <br /> <br />2. High-flow partial-record stations <br /> <br />The purpose of these stations is to define flood frequency for small <br />drainage areas. Continuation of this network is recommended for a period <br />of at least S years. At the end of the S-year period, sufficient record <br />will be available at all small area stations to define the 2-year flood. <br />Also, sufficient data should be available at the stations equipped with <br />stage and rainfall recorders to define the parameters in a rainfall-runoff <br />model such as described by Lichty and others (1968). The records of annual <br />peak flow at these stations can then be extended in time by use of the <br />model and long-term rainfall records. This will permit definition of the <br />SO-year flood and the ratio of SO-year flood to 2-year flood (QSO/Q2) at <br />these stations. Generalization of the data can then be accomplished by <br />regressions relating the 2-year flood and QSO/Q2 to basin characteristics. <br /> <br />An extension of this network is proposed to sample basins in urban and <br />suburban areas where the type of land use greatly Increases the magnitude <br />of flood peaks and where data are not now available to define flood fre- <br />quency under these conditions. High-flow partial-record stations equipped <br />with stage and rainfall recorders have 'been installed In the metropolitan <br />area of Wichita In cooperation with the city. They also should be installed <br />in a minimum of IS urban drainage areas with varying characteristics in <br />other major cities in Kansas and should be operated for a minimum of S years. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />3. Low-flow partial-record stations <br /> <br />The network of 6S low-flow partial record stations has been operated <br />for about 15 years. An evaluation of the data obtained at each station is <br />being conducted to determine if adequate correlations can be established <br />with Index stations. Judgment on these stations should be reserved until <br />this evaluation Is complete. <br /> <br />37 <br />
