ww

food-chain organisms, and fish must be determined after
restoration and these concentrations related to possible adverse
biological effects in the fish.

Taak~. Konitor oandidate aites.

Rationale
In order to determine the suitability of restored floodplain
habitats for use by razorback suckers and other listed fishes,
the degree of selenium (and other inorganics) contamination in
several key ecosystem components must be determined. Moreover,
general habitat characteristics such as water quality, sediment
texture, and primary production should be assessed in these
sites. This information is needed for developing future research
strategies to assess the suitability of these restored sites as
razorback sucker habitats.

Procedure
A comprehensive survey will be attempted to determine the
present level of selenium (and other inorganics) contamination in
the two candidate restoration sites before the water control
structures are installed. This monitoring effort will be
continued after remediation measures have been implemented to
determine if concentrations of these contaminants have changed in
response to these measures. In addition to selenium, the other
inorganics to be monitored at the sites will be determined after
consultation with contaminant experts from the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service and U.S. Geological Survey. This monitoring
program will also include measurements of general water quality
parameters, sediment texture, and water and sediment discharge
into and out of each restoration site. The major components of
the monitoring phase are as follows:

1. Establish sampling sites in each candidate restoration

2
