ISkl

evaluations will tell us if the intensively-managed floodplain
habitat sites can support razorback suckers, but they will not tell
us if razorbacks are successfully recruiting into the adult
population and successfully reproducing. A basin-wide monitoring
and evaluation program is needed to determine if our efforts are
helping the Green River razorback population; or helping populations
of nonnative species; and/or adversely affecting channel and
floodplain stability and geomorphology.

Goal:

To monitor biologic and physical response of the Green and Colorado
river systems to razorback sucker restoration activities.

Objectives:

1. Develop a standardized monitoring/evaluation program for
razorback suckers.

2. Implement program.
End Product:

A standardized monitoring program which identifies locations, data
to be collected, dates, protocols, reporting responsibilities,
costs, and schedules, for implementation in FY 96. Annual reports
will be similar to ISMP reports, except that they will focus on the
status and trends of razorbacks; on the status and trends of
populations of "problematic" nonnative species; and on annual trends
in physical habitat parameters.

IV. Description of past performance on this or similar projects:

The ISMP, which has been in existence for several years, focuses
primarily on trends in Colorado squawfish populations, and in
humpback chub populations. There is no monitoring program for
razorback suckers.

V. Study Area

The sites and segments will be located on the Green, Colorado and
Gunnison rivers.

VI. Study Methods/Approach

I would recommend hiring an outside contractor to design a long-term
monitoring and evaluation program for razorback sucker restoration
activities. The program would be developed interactively with
razorback sucker experts, ISMP experts, and outside experts that
have extensive experience in large river monitoring programs,
sampling gears/strategies/methods, and population indices.
Monitoring and evaluation sites will need to be established, and

2
