Upper Arkansas flood control and conservation needs
in Kansas

Water Issues (Fresh Water, Marine, Estuarine, Groundwater): I
01 & 20 Irrigation. In the weatern portion of the area, including Bacs County,
Al,A2,A3, Colorado, groundwater depletions are occurring to the extent that a
Bl,B2 mining situation has developed. Surface waters are erratic.
03-A2,BI Wat.er Quality. Water quality of surface waters of the Arkansas River !
Is 8 problem particularly during low flow periods.
07-Fl ,F2, F3 Recreation. There Is concern for water oriented recreation on the 1
Arkansas River, and on tributaries_ There is limited development of
fish and wildlife on the Arkansas and tributaries largely due to long
periods of limited water supply.
20-Al,A2, Groundwater is used for irrigation and M&I. Mining of groundwater is
Bl,B2 occurring.
Related Land Issues:
30,31,34,35- Flood ing t erosion, and sedimentation are problems in the area, par-
Al,Bl,B2 ticularly on the Arkansas River and major tributaries. Flood ing
occurs on the Arkansas and tributaries, particularly at Kinsley,
Larned, and Great Bend.
37-G5,G6 Phrea tophy te management. This is of concern along the main stem of
the Arkansas River. Water salvage would be beneficial but this
would reduce wildlife habitat.
Institutional Issues:
Financing and Repayment Issues:
Other (including interrelationships among issues):
During long drought periods this area haa dust storms that are severe, particularly
in Western Kansas and Eastern Colorado.
Description of Problem Area: This includes the Upper Arkansas Basin in Kansas, including
